Strútstigur
and the Icelandic highlands
The Icelandic highlands are one of the few wildernesses we have left in Europe. It is a rare luxury to experience the silence that can be found here. On Into The Wild Highlands we hike far from everything, even from hikers. In the highlands you will encounter a cleansing rawness, and a wild beauty that goes beyond words. It must be experienced.
The hiking route is called Strútstigur, named after the characteristic mountain Strútur. The route crosses the famous Eldgjá crater in Iceland's most powerful volcanic region where the famous Laugavegur hiking route also runs. The variety of nature experiences spans a wide range over our 4 days of hiking. On our first day we depart in our own trekking bus from Reykjavík and pass through South Iceland with a stopover in picturesque Vík in Mýrdal. From here we completely remove ourselves from civilization and drive across the South Icelandic highlands to Hólaskjól. After a short hike we arrive at our cabin by the Alftavötn lakes. On the second day we hike a dayhike into the highlands to Strútskali, with a stop for a swim in the natural geothermal pool Strutlaug. We stay in Strútskali on the third day, where we climb Strútur or explore the colorful rhyolitic volcanic area at Törfajökull. On the fourth day we cross the desert moraine landscapes of Mælifellssandur along Myrdalsjökull to Hvangill, where we are picked up by our bus and driven towards Reykjavík.

Into the Wild Highlands differs from other hikes by a more conscious approach to hiking as a personal process. We hike with presence, both towards the surroundings, our bodies, and each other. You must therefore be prepared to be able to hike in silence for periods of time and respect the framework for this. The silence will deepen your experience and make it more memorable. We set aside time for quietness and notebook writing in the open air and have daily group sharing, where you in a small group have the opportunity to share your thoughts and process from the hike.
We must prepare for the changeable Icelandic weather, which can be both magical and extreme. Storms, strong winds, cold temperatures and dense fog are weather we must be prepared for, and the right packing and preparation for this trip is therefore particularly important. With you are mentally and physically strong Soulhike guides, who set the framework for the trip and take care of guiding, safety, logistics and cooking.
