Elsebeth in the icelandic mountains

The nature of Greenland shaped me more than school did. As a child I ran off every afternoon after school to play in the mountains. Here I developed a close relationship with Arctic nature. School led me further into society, to literature and a life of teaching, while my heart continued to long for the mountains of my childhood. When I moved to Iceland in 2020, I experienced a country I never wanted to leave. A nature that brought me back to myself and into deeper connection with the nature that has shaped us all. In 2024, I decided to leave my academic career in favor of a life in and with nature and founded Soulhike. My mission is now to support others towards a deeper connection to nature through hiking.

We are at a critical point in both human history and planetary time. We have entered what geologists call the Anthropocene era, the human era in which the species Homo Sapiens is causing changes to the climate and atmosphere of the Earth. Humans have become a geological force of planetary dimensions. The fact that one species exerts influence on the climate of the entire Earth is a new phenomenon in the geological history of the planet We have thus entered a new geological era; the era of human nature. We can no longer turn a blind eye to the fact that our way of life has planetary consequences and fatal consequences for our fellow species on Earth.

The civilizational crisis we find ourselves in as humanity is concerned with human nature. Who are we and who do we want to be? There is a global call to turn our attention to nature and the ecologies we are part of. How can we, if we have turned away from nature and lost our connection to it, find solutions to the ecological crisis? I believe that we need to spend more time in nature to restore our connection to nature. This is not something we can learn in school. In nature we connect with a way of being more connected to our surroundings and fellow species.

We need renewed strength and inspiration to take on the challenges we face in the 21st century, both on a personal and collective level. Each of us has a unique contribution to make to the optimal future timeline of our species. And this contribution cannot be made in fear. I believe that we must act from a place of love of Earth and all its species, and not out of fear of the apocalypse.

Therefore Soulhike's hikes are not just about experience, but about connection. My mission is to bring everyone home changed. It is my joy to create lifechanging hikes to you -- In honor and love of Mother Earth.
